2013 Pepper Grow

My 2013 pepper growing season is officially underway! Last year wasn’t all that great primarily due to the drought. The season started great but then the rain stopped and the temperatures climbed. I still managed to harvest a decent amount of peppers but none of them really grew to their full potential and some plants only produced a handful of stunted peppers. Fingers crossed for a better 2013 growing season.

Here’s the the lineup this year:

Giant Red Bhut Jolokia x 2
Yellow Bhut Jolokia x 2
Chocolate Bhut Jolokia x 2
Caramel Bhut Jolokia x 2
Peach Bhut Jolokia x 2
Red Douglah Cross x 1
7 Pot Brain Strain x 1
Carolina Reaper x 1
Chocolate Habanero x 2
Big Cayenne x 2
Caribbean Red x 3

I put seeds in the dirt on February 3 so should have the first sprouts and day. More than likely I will add some more plants but this is enough to get things rolling.

5 Bhut Jolokia / Ghost Pepper Varieties

Here’s a picture of 5 bhut jolokia varieties I’m growing this year. Starting with red and moving clockwise: red bhuts, peach bhuts, chocolate bhuts, yellow bhuts and caramel bhuts.

Yellow Bhut Jolokia 2012 Grow Part 2

As I mentioned in part 1 of my yellow bhut grow post I’m on a quest for the perfect yellow bhut this year and am growing yellow bhuts from 3 different sources. Despite a slow start to the pepper growing season this year due to drought and excessive heat things are starting to progress nicely now that the heat wave seems to have passed.

First up in today’s update are a few yellow bhut pod and plant pictures from seeds provided by Spicegeist. I’m growing 3 plants from this seed. One of them just started ripening red but the other two look one great. One plant in particular is showing all of the characteristics I’m looking for. Large gnarly looking yellow pods. This was one of the first pods to appear and is being processed today for seeds:

The plant is putting out pretty consistent looking pods too:

Next up we have some ripe pod pic from the yellow bhut seeds I received from BigT. I have two of these plants plants going. The plants are heavy producers and taste/heat is still TBD but for the most part the pods are coming in smoother and somewhat smaller than what I’m looking for.

Lastly here’s a picture of a pod that’s starting to ripen on the sole plant I have growing from cmpman1974. The pods look similar to the pods from Spicegeist only a little smaller and at least for now, kind of orange looking. This plant has been growing a little slower than the others too.

I’ll post another update in week or two after there’s more pods ripe and the plants are bigger.

Yellow Bhut Jolokia 2012 Grow Part 1

This season I’m growing 6 yellow bhut jolokia plants from 3 different seed sources. I’m on a quest for the “perfect” yellow bhut.

First up are pods from two plants I grew from seed provided by BigT. Overall both plants are growing well and I like the look of some of the early pods.

Next up are pods from 3 plants I grew from seed provided by Spicegeist. These plants are also growing well. While all 3 plants are showing promise the second picture/plant is the best looking yellow bhut I have going right now. Unless the other pods on that plant look a lot different this one will be a seed keeper for sure.

Last up is a pod from the only plant I was able to get started from seed provided by cmpman1974. This plant has been a bit of a slow grower but the early pods are taking a nice shape. Really glad I was able to get at least one plant going from the batch of seeds I received.

I will post another yellow bhut grow update once some of the pods start to ripen. Stay tuned!

Bhut Jolokia aka Ghost Pepper Chili

In the world of hot peppers, while no longer the record holder for being the hottest, the bhut jolokia or “ghost pepper” is still the most popular super hot pepper. Is the ghost pepper as widely known as the habanero…not even close. Is it getting more popular…you bet!

Known Ghost Pepper Varieties
There are a number of bhut jolokia strains. Some much more stable than others…the least stable or “ghost pepper like” in my opinion are the purple, white and caramel bhut jolokias. That said, here are the types I know of:

1. Red Bhut Jolokia
2. Giant Red Bhut Jolokia
3. Chocolate Bhut Jolokia
4. Yellow Bhut Jolokia
5. Purple Bhut Jolokia (questionable)
6. White Bhut Jolokia (questionable)
7. Assam Bhut Jolokia Indian Carbon
8. Caramel Bhut Jolokia (questionable)
9. Peach Bhut Jolokia
