7 Pot Douglah – The World’s 2nd Hottest Chili Pepper

For now. The recently released test results for the moruga scorion also included results for three other peppers, one of which was called “chocolate 7-pot”. The chocolate 7 pot tested at 1,853,396 SHU on the high end and 923,889 SHU on the low end. It’s mean SHU of 1,169,058 was second only moruga scorpion. Given the chocolate 7 pot’s high highs and consistently high lows I don’t think it’s unreasonable to speculate that if tested again in the future it would not be a shock to see the chocolate 7 pot surpass the 2 million scoville mark of the moruga scorpion.

At this point you ay be wondering why the title of this post is “7 pot douglah” but all I have mentioned is the chocolate 7 pot. In a recent post Jim Duffy shed some light on the chocolate 7 pot used in the tests. Jim said: “Now the Chocolate 7 Pot they mention was Douglah. I got my Douglah seeds from Neal and Semillas. “

News of the douglah possibly being the hottest won’t come as shock to those who have had one. I’ve read post after post and watched countless taste test videos where the verdict was that the douglah was the hottest pepper the person had ever tasted. My personal experience is the same. I think it’s a toss up between the 7 pot brain strain and the 7 pot douglah. While both peppers tore me up I was not at all fond of the douglah taste. The brain strain has a pleasant taste for about 2 seconds until my face started to melt.

I grew a douglah last year but it turned red. The common theme in the discussion was that douglah can’t be red. Fast forward a few months and another forum member had the same thing happen, a red douglah. That person happens to sell seeds and I noticed that this year seeds from those red douglah pods are being sold as Trinidad Red Douglah Offspring. The ones I grew were super hot..right up there with the hottest I’ve tried. I saved a bunch of seeds from the one I grew, maybe I should plant a few this year…

Should be interesting to see how this plays out. My money’s on the douglah taking the record for hottest pepper at some point…now the question is will be it the classic brown douglah or a red douglah offspring?

Trinidad Scorpion Moruga – The World’s Hottest Chili Pepper

Ever since the ghost pepper took the crown for the world’s hottest pepper in 2007 in seems the race for the new hottest pepper has accelerated. That said meet the Trinidad Scorpion Moruga Blend (or is it Morouga?). According to the photo being circulated Jim Duffy of Refining Fire Chiles the pepper(s) Jim had tested came in at over 2 million scoville units. If true that would crush the previous record of 1,463,700 set by the Butch T Trinidad Scorpion pepper. Prior to the Butch T the Naga Viper had the record for very short period of time and was measured at 1,382,118 scoville heat units.

At 2,009,231 the Moruga is a screamer for sure but what I find interesting is the highs and lows reported on the chart. The bhut jolokia actually beat out the 7 pot and Trinidad scorpion peppers on the high end. The record setting Moruga pepper is on the low end of the heat scale on the low end of measurement. The chocolate 7 pot took 2nd and in this test had the highest score on the low end of the range. Perhaps that signifies a more consistent heat level with that type of pepper.

While Jim may take credit for this grow and for the getting it recorded as the hottest pepper in the world I did some digging to see if I could find who/how and where this pepper started growing in the united states. I was pleasantly surprised, it looks like Christopher Phillips, aka cmpman1974 was the first to acquire the seeds and start spreading them to the pepper community. According to Chris “I got them originally in early 2007. Sent seeds across the world in 2008. They’ve been grown in a lot of countries now. 🙂 It’s a definitely landrace in Trinidad as told to me by my original source. I have no doubt it’s stable.”  Not only does Chris take some of best pepper pictures on earth he’s also a very generous guy. A nice section of my garden this year is dedicated to yellow bhut jolokia seeds Chris sent me a few months ago:-) Thanks for all you do for the pepper community Chris!

(Jim Duffy later confirmed that his seeds were given to him by a source that received them from Chris)

Selling Pepper Seeds?

While I don’t sell pepper seeds I do buy them and know a bunch of seed sellers. As spring approaches for a large portion of the united states the pepper seed selling starts ramping up but when does it peak? In terms of online activity – specifically search volume, interest in pepper seeds peaks Feb/Mar with March being the clear winner in recent years:

Equally as interesting to seed sellers would be knowing if in general pepper seeds are becoming more popular or less popular. My guess would be more popular (I’m biased!) but let’s take a closer look:

Seed sellers rejoice! Not only are pepper seeds rising in popularity but since 2009 the popularity of pepper seed related searches has risen considerably faster than the gardening and landscaping search category as a whole. The trend really accelerated in 2011 which indicate seed sellers can expect strong demand in 2012.

I predict that 2012 will still be the year of the ghost pepper. Even though the Butch T Scorp took the record in 2011 it’s still a looooong way from taking any real market share from the bhut jolokia / ghost pepper. Last year was the first time that search volume for the Butch T grew faster than search volume for the habanero and that passing was extremely short and temporary…as of now habanero has retaken it’s spot above the Butch T.

Seed sellers prepare for the year of the ghost pepper, again!

Happy Growing.

Bhut Jolokia aka Ghost Pepper Chili

In the world of hot peppers, while no longer the record holder for being the hottest, the bhut jolokia or “ghost pepper” is still the most popular super hot pepper. Is the ghost pepper as widely known as the habanero…not even close. Is it getting more popular…you bet!

Known Ghost Pepper Varieties
There are a number of bhut jolokia strains. Some much more stable than others…the least stable or “ghost pepper like” in my opinion are the purple, white and caramel bhut jolokias. That said, here are the types I know of:

1. Red Bhut Jolokia
2. Giant Red Bhut Jolokia
3. Chocolate Bhut Jolokia
4. Yellow Bhut Jolokia
5. Purple Bhut Jolokia (questionable)
6. White Bhut Jolokia (questionable)
7. Assam Bhut Jolokia Indian Carbon
8. Caramel Bhut Jolokia (questionable)
9. Peach Bhut Jolokia
